In January 2013, the Yvonne McCalla Foundation Inc. (YMF Inc.) Breast Cancer Awareness Organization expanded their cancer, education, and outreach initiative to include the male population for screening of prostate cancer. With the assistance of churches and community leaders, prostate cancer education and outreach services were provided to the community to assure persons at risk and persons who are eligible for the prostate cancer screening are aware and have access to the free program.

The criteria for the target population is: low-income, uninsured, under insured persons who are but not limited to African American and Latino men above the age of forty (40) who are considered to be at high risk for prostate cancer. High risk is defined as someone who has had a first degree relative (father, brothers) who has had prostate cancer. The screening program is also for men age fifty (50) years and older.

YMF Inc. is very passionate about encouraging our community to take responsibility for their health. Union County has been identified as a community in New Jersey that is in dire need of cancer services.

Through Union County’s New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection Program (NJCEED) Cancer Screening Program, YMF Inc. partnered with Hoboken Family Planning to ensure that prostate cancer services were provided to the community.

YMF Inc. was able to train and employ consultants to assist in carrying out this initiative.

In 2010, YMF Inc. participated as Community Advocates for the Women’s Circle of Health Study with The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, UMDNJ.  The Women’s Circle of Health Study was parallel with YMF Inc. mission.  It evaluated factors explaining the earlier age at diagnosis and the more aggressive nature of breast cancer in African – American women, compared to Caucasian Women.  YMF Inc. strives to bring awareness of the above to minority women from adolescent to geriatric population.
